Art History Connection Piece- In Progress

DEVELOP CRAFT |
I used cherry wood, a basic carving knife, a curved spoon knife, a belt sander, a band saw, and sand paper. I am planning on finishing it off with butcher block oil. I have been wood working for about a year and a half now, and am fairly experienced with it. I am not as good at using larger power tools that I have not used before. I have also never used a curved spoon knife before so it has been different but not necessarily hard.

ENGAGE & PERSIST |
I have a habit of listening to music when I work because I find it gets me in the zone. I have spent about 2 hours a day on this project. some days I spend more, but some days I spend a little less. I will not need much longer, because I just to do some finishing touches. I plan on just doing a little more sanding, then putting oil on it.

ENVISION |
I will finish this by sanding a little bit more, then just putting oil on it. the oil will make the wood look darker.

EXPRESS |
I am basing this off medieval wooden spoons and celtic knots. the handle has a celtic knot.

OBSERVE |
I have learned that harder wood makes it much easier to control what I am carving. I have used a few different woods, and I think cherry is my favorite.

STRETCH & EXPLORE |
Because I have never used a curved spoon knife, I have felt, almost, like it could slip and cut me, but it didn't happen. Also, I have never make a celtic knot pattern before. so I wasn't sure how it would turn out.

UNDERSTAND THE ART COMMUNITY AND WORLD |
My piece connects to the medieval period because wooden spoons were popular then, and celtic knots, such as the one on the handle, were popular in celtic culture.

Portfolio

In my art, I focus on either a darker side of art or I focus on a more humorous side. As an artist, I want to show that things don’t always have to be so black and white. I am inspired by dark art. I am also inspired by art that shows humorous things in more serious situations or looks. Ever since I was a kid, art was a part of my life. I have always loved art and It has always, for me, been a stress reliever. I can’t imagine my life or who I would be without art. I would imagine that a world without art would be extremely boring and dull. We are blessed to have a world with such diverse expression and ideas.
My whole life, I have loved to explore different mediums of art. No matter what medium of art I make, I have found that I always liked it to look either very serious, humorous, or both. The source of this, I have no idea, but what I do know, is that it always subconsciously comes up in my art. My favorite art tool would probably be a simple pencil. I love pencils because they are so easy to use, and you can do almost anything with them. They are, possibly, the most versatile art tool. I love to use different types of pencils like colored pencils, ebony pencils, and just simple, everyday pencils most of all.

When I say that I think my art turned out well, I mean a variety of things. I first mean that it is aesthetically pleasing. I like my art to be cohesive and clean. I also mean that it turned out how I pictured it in my head. Before starting an art piece, I envisage what I would like the piece to look like. I would consider the piece successful if it turns out looking like that mental picture. when I pick colors for my art, I like to have one color that pops out more than the others. For example, If the piece is dark and has dark grays and blacks, I like to use a bright red to add contrast and something for the eye to be drawn to.
