Art History Connection Piece- In Progress

DEVELOP CRAFT | 

I used cherry wood, a basic carving knife, a curved spoon knife, a belt sander, a band saw, and sand paper. I am planning on finishing it off with butcher block oil. I have been wood working for about a year and a half now, and am fairly experienced with it. I am not as good at using larger power tools that I have not used before. I have also never used a curved spoon knife before so it has been different but not necessarily hard. 

ENGAGE & PERSIST | 

I have a habit of listening to music when I work because I find it gets me in the zone. I have spent about 2 hours a day on this project. some days I spend more, but some days I spend a little less. I will not need much longer, because I just to do some finishing touches. I plan on just doing a little more sanding, then putting oil on it.

ENVISION | 

I will finish this by sanding a little bit more, then just putting oil on it. the oil will make the wood look darker. 

EXPRESS | 

I am basing this off medieval wooden spoons and celtic knots. the handle has a celtic knot. 

OBSERVE | 

I have learned that harder wood makes it much easier to control what I am carving. I have used a few different woods, and I think cherry is my favorite. 

STRETCH & EXPLORE | 

Because I have never used a curved spoon knife, I have felt, almost, like it could slip and cut me, but it didn't happen. Also, I have never make a celtic knot pattern before. so I wasn't sure how it would turn out.

My piece connects to the medieval period because wooden spoons were popular then, and celtic knots, such as the one on the handle, were popular in celtic culture.
