Famous Photographers #1 Minimalism and Beauty in Decay

Grant Hamilton

     Simple, colorful, lines, vintage, unique
It relates to minimalism because it is finding a bright, colorful picture of what is likely a simple sign or an ordinary mural.
Does not relate to beauty in decay
I like the simplicity and clean lines, although they are all so different, they all fit together.
I would like to make a series of simple lines or designs. I would like to have a similar eye.

Martin Cox

    Spontaneous, interesting, eye-catching, contrast, dark.
It relates to minimalism because of the overwhelming amount of negative space. the contrast of the dark figures on the white is eye-catching.
In some cases, his photography shows beauty in decay. When he photographs an old farm, it may not be considered the most aesthetically pleasing, but he finds a way to make it beautiful.
I like the figures against the white background. It is an amazing contrast.
I would like to see things the way he sees them, to see where contrast like this can be found.

Doug Ness

     Bright, urban, contrast, texture, lines
Relates to minimalism because it shows small details and lines from a likely busy and eclectic wall.
These do relate to beauty in decay. these walls are likely seen as trashy and dirty, but he makes them fun and interesting and brings them to life.
I like the emphasis on bright colors and stark contrast.
I would like to capture a similar contrast and find bright, fun pictures in the most simple environment,

Beauty and Decay

  • In between the tiles, grass grew, but it was never pulled or weeded. It was simply left. now it lies, dead between the times
  • This is an example of things we leave behind.
  • I felt the photograph would have depth and texture while showing the position of the grass
  • Leading lines, texture, asymmetrical balance, fill the frame.

  •  The boards that were once new and straight are now warped and in disarray.
  •  Although not left behind completely, the signs were never fixed.
  • I felt it would be interesting to capture the line of the signs as they went up.
  • contrast, large amounts of negative space, leaving lines, using the sky as negative space, simplicity.

  •  This baseball is naturally cracked and destroyed from sitting alone in the dugout.
  • this ball was lost under the bench and forgotten about. no one noticed that it was slowing breaking down form not being used
  • When I saw the ball under the bench against the blue tarp, I immediately needed to photograph it.
  • texture, contrast, the rule of thirds.
(outside of class)
  • The nails have, over time, been pushed out of the wood as well as become very rusted
  • although not necessarily forgotten about, they were not thought about, nor  were they preserved
  •  I felt as though there would be a cool effect if I were to take this picture from this angle. The nails would look interesting as they pulled out of the wood.
  • symmetry, contrast, texture, negative space.
